PLANETARY AVASTHAS - PART 1 - written by Nirbanjyoti Das

Today , I am going to tell you the details of planetary avasthas through which calculations you will be able to understand which planet could be said powerful or which planet could be said powerless.

In Jyotish planetary avastha or graha avastha is divided by five catagoriees and they are following - 

Baladi Avasthas - Set of 5 avasthas and they are - bala , kumara , yuva , vriddha and mitra 

Jagradadi Avasthas - Set of 3 avasthas and they are - jagrata  , swapna and susupti 

Lajjitadi Avasthas - Set of 6 avasthas and they are lajjita , garvita , ksudhita , trsita , mudita and kshobhita

Deeptadi Avasthas - Set of 9 avasthas and they are - dipta , svastha , mudita , santa , dina , dukhita , vikala , khala and kopa 

Sayanadi Avasthas - Set of 12 avasthas and they are Sayana , upavesana , netrapani , prakasa , gaman , aagamana , sabhaa , aagama , bhojana , nritya lipsaaa , kautuka and nidra 

lets study them one by one.

------------------------BALADI AVASTHAS --------------------------------

In case of odd rasis - 

 0 deg. to 6 deg. - bala

6 deg. to 12 deg. - kumara

12 deg. to 18 deg.- yuva

18 deg. to 24 deg. - vriddha

24 deg. to 30 deg. - mrita

In case of even rasi -

 0 deg. to 6 deg. - mrita

6 deg. to 12 deg. - vriddha

12 deg. to 18 deg.- yuva

18 deg. to 24 deg. - kumara

24 deg. to 30 deg. - bala 

Now, again odd rasis are - Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagitarius, Aquarius

and even rasis are - Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, capricorn and pisces

 Jagrata - In own rasi or exaltation

Swapna - In rasi of a friend or neutral

Susupti - In enemy’s rasi or debilitation

-------------------------LAJJITADI AVASTHAS----------------------

Lajjita - When planets are in putra bhab or 5th house with rahu , ketu or  sani .

Garvita - When planets are in exaltation or multrikono.

Ksudhita - In an enemy’s rasi or yuti with an enemy, or receives a drishti from an enemy, or even if a planet is yuti with Saturn.

Krsita - When planets are in watery sign, not receiving dristi form any beneffic but aspecting malefic 

Mudita - When planets are associated or aspected by friendly planets or aspected by functional beneffic planets , yogakaraka planets etc

Kshobhita - Yuti with sun or aspected by sun or associated with maleffic and no beneffic dristi 

------------------------------DEEPTADI AVASTHAS----------------------

Dipta - When planets is in its exaltation rasi

Svastha - When a planet is in own rasi

Mudita - When a planet is in great friend rasi

Santa - When a planet is in friendly rasi

Dina - When a planet is in netrual rasi

Dukhita - When a planet is in enemy rasi

Vikala - When a planet is associated with maleffic planet

Khala - When a planet is in great enemy rasi

Kopa - When a planet is closely combusted

-----------------------------SAYANADI AVASTHAS-------------------------

Sayanadi avastha is the most complicated method to study always. There is a mathematical calculation we should know before we know the effects of sayanadi avastha of planets. Which I am discussing below.

1ST STEP :- 
‘C’ - Nakshatra number occupied by the planet (1 for aswini, 2 for bharani etc.)

‘P’ - Planet whose avastha we have to calculate (1 for Sun, 2 for Moon, 3 for Mars, 4 for Mercury, 5 for Jupiter, 6 for Venus and 7 for Saturn).

‘A’ - Index of the Navamsa occupied by the planet in rasi.

‘M’ - Constellation occupied by Moon.

‘G’ - Ghati running at birth.

‘L’ - Rasi occupied by Lagna (1 for Aries, 2 for Taurus) and so on).

2ND STEP :- 
Compute (C x P x A) + M + G + L and then divide it by 12 and take the remainder. Using the resulting number as the avastha index and referring to table given above, we find out the avastha of the planet.
When reminder is -

1 - Sayana
2  - Upavesana
3 - Netrapani
4 - Prakasa
5 - Gaman
6 - Aagamana
7 - Sabhaa
8 - Aagama
9 - Bhojana
10 - Nritya Lipsaaa
11 - Kautuka
0 - Nidra


3RD STEP :-
We have to add a planetary
adjustment to the remainder. We use 5 for Sun and Jupiter, 2 for Moon and Mars, 3 for Mercury, Venus and Saturn and 4 for Rahu and Ketu. We divide the sum by 3 and take the remainder. This gives the strength of the activity.

A value of 1 means “drishti” and medium results.
A value of 2 means “cheshta” and full results.
A value of 3 or 0 means “vicheshta” and gives very little results.

Planets with 29 degree and 0 degree - How they behave in astrology

Planets with 29 degree and planets with 0 degree behaves totally different way and one need to see very perfectly before predicting planetary characteristics of planets sitting in 29 degree or 0 degree.

We know that every planet have a dispersion degree. This means the effect of that planet is available between that dispersion point. Suppose Sun have dispersion degree  is 10 degree front and 10 degree back, did you get it ? let me help you with an example.

Suppose  sun is in 3 Degree of Gemini then the effect of sun will be effective 10 degree front and 10 degree back. means Sun effect will be felt from 19 degree of Taurus to 17 degree of Gemini. Now, think native is Capricorn lagna. So, this means Sun effect will have effect in his 5th house and 6th house originally. Though  classics does not obey this. According to classics The dispersion of a planet for all are the same and it is 15 degree front and 15 degree back. Means, for the above native sun effect will be form 18 degree of Taurus to 18 degree of Gemini. Anyway , we can see this does not effect too much. lets go according to classics since in astrology we should out of classics.

Now , the point is how the planet will behave in 29 degree and 0 degree. Simply the crazy way. We can see a planet is in 29 degree means he is sitting at edge of house. His cosmic lights are from 15 degree of the house it leaving and 15 degree from the house it is going. From the planetary avastas concept that in case of odd rasi such planets are called old( 29 degree) & child (0 degree) and in case of even rasi they are called child( 29 degree) and old( 0 degree) . So, virtually the working capacity of such planets are Nil.

Even KRS recently says planets in 0 degree are zero powerful.

So, planetary energy is distributed between two house and hence made them powerless. 

NAVATARA CHAKRA - HOW YOU WILL CALCULATE USES OF IT

Nava means nine or 9 and tara means Nakshatra. The circle of 9 starts out of 27 Nakshatra is called Navatara chakra.

The Nine Nakshatra would be following - (1) Janma (2) Sampat (3) Vipata (4) Ksema (5) Pratyari (6) Sadhaka (7) Vadha (8) Mitra and (9) Atimitra.

Suppose you are born on Ashwini Nakshatra, Ashwini will be the starting point of the nakshatra tara chakra and the nakshatras will be termed as below with reference to Ashwini :-

Ashwini, Magha, Moola – Janma
Bharni, Purva-phalguni, Purva-shada – Sampat
Krittika, Uttara-phalguni, Uttara-shada – Vipat
Rohini, Hasta, Shravan – Kshema
Mrigshira, Chitra, Dhanistha – Pratyari
Ardra, Swati, Satabhisha -Sadhak
Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva-bhadrapada – Vadha
Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara-bhadrapada – Mitra
Ashlesha – Ati-mitra

So, we can say the followng formula,
1st nakshatra is your Janma nakshatra..
10th and 19th nakshatra are your janma nakshatras..
2 , 11  & 20th nakshtras will be your Sampat nakshatras..
3 , 12 & 21th nakshatra will be your Vipat nakshatras..
4 , 13 & 22th nakshatra will be our Kshema nakshatras..
5 , 14 & 23th nakshatra will be your Pratyari nakshatras..
6 , 15 & 24th nakshatra will be your Sadhak Nakshatras..
7, 16 & 25th nakshatra will be your Vadha nakshatras..
8 , 17 & 26th nakshatra will be your Mitra nakshatras..

CLASSIFICATION OF DAYS - Gentle days are - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered as the 'gentle' days. These days are considered auspicious for commencing any good work. Tuesday, Sunday and Saturday are considered as 'cruel' days. Saturday is considered an auspicious day for undergoing operation. Thursday is considered auspicious for starting education. YOGAS - There are 27 Yogas in all. KARANA - Half of the part of a Tithi is called a Karana i.e. There are two Karanas in a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas altogether. They are: 1) BALA, 2) BAALAVA, 3) KAULAVA, 4) TAITIL, 5) GARA, 6) VANIJA, 7) VISHTI, 8) SHAKUNI, 9) CHATUSHPADA, 10) NAAGA, 11) KINSTUGHNA .

The first 7 of these Karanas are movable (Chara) i.e. it cannot be predetermined as to on which dates, these are going to occur, but the last 4 Karanas are fixed (Sthira), and hence can be predetermined.

WEEKS VS NAKSHATRA - Sunday - Bharani , Monday - Chitra , Tuesday - Uttarashadha , Wednesday - Dhanishtha , Thursday - Uttaraphalguni , Friday - Jyeshtha , Saturday - Revati - as said.

15 Tithis are there - Pratipada , Dwitiya , Tritiya , Chaturthi , Panchami , Shashthi , Saptami ,Ashtami , Navami , Dashami , Ekadasi , Dwadashi ,Trayodashi , Chaturdashi , Purnima . Similarly, in the Krishna-Paksha, starting from Pratipada till Chaturdashi, all the dates are same; the only difference being the fifteenth day which is Amavasya (Moonless night).

TITHIS - The 15 days have been given / distributed in five catagories. Which are called panchaTithi? They are - Nanda( 1st day , 6thday , 11th day and Friday) , Bhadra( 2nd day , 7th day , 12th day , wednessday) , Jaya( 3rd day , 8th day , 13th day , Tuesday) , Rikta( 4th day , 9th day , 14th day , Saturday) and Purna( 5th day , 10th day , 15- 30th and Thursday).

HOUSES OWN BY PLANETS - Mars own two houses - Aries and Scorpio, Venus own two houses - Taurus and Libra, Mercury own two houses - Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter own two houses - Pisces and Sagittarius, Saturn own two houses - Capricorn and Aquarius. Moon and sun occupies following houses and only one house - cancer and Leo.

HOUSES - The 2 nd and 7 th house are called the Maraka or "killer" houses, and have the capacity to cause death or disease.Houses 3,6,9 and 12 are called the Apoklima or cadent houses.Houses 2,5,8 and 11 are the Panapara or "succedent" houses. Houses 6, 8 and 12 are the dushtana houses, or houses of suffering and difficulties. Houses 3, 6, 11 and 10 are the upachaya houses or "houses of growth" . Houses 1, 5, and 9 are the trikona or trine houses. Houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are the Kendra or "angular" houses. Houses 4, 8 and 12 th are the Moksha houses. CASTE - Jupiter & Venus called Brahmins, Sun & Mars is called Kshatriya , Mercury & moon is called Vaishya , Saturn is called Shoodra.

TYPE OF PLANETS - Sun, moon & Jupiter are satwik planets. Venus & mercury are Rajsik planets, Mars & Saturn is Tamsik planets.

DIRECTION - Sun - East , Moon - North East , Mars - South , Jupiter - North East , Mercury - North , Venus - South East , Saturn - West , Rahu/ ketu - South west.

PLACES - Sun - Temple , Moon - Watery Place , Mars - Place of Fire , Jupiter - Treasure House , Venus - Bed Room , Mercury - Play Ground , Saturn - Dirty Place.

ELEMENTS - Elements of Planets. Mercury - earthy , Moon & Venus - Water , Sun & Mars - Fire , Saturn - Air , Jupiter - Sky.
Physical constituents of Planets. Sun - Bones , Moon - Blood , Mars - Marrow , Mercury - Skin , Jupiter - fat , Venus - Semen , Saturn - Muscles.

COMPLEXION - Complexion of planets. Mars, sun - Blood red , Moon - Tawny, Mercury - Green , Jupiter - Tawny , venus - varigated , Saturn - Dark.

TASTE - Taste of Planets. Sun - Pumgent , Moon - Saline , Mars - Bitter , Mercury - Mixed , Jupiter - Sweet , venus - Sour , Saturn - Astrigent tastes.

MATURITY AGE - When Planets gets matured. Sun at 22 years of age , Moon at 24 years of age , Mars at 28 years of age , mercury at 32 years of age , Jupiter 16 years , venys - 25 years , Saturn at 36 years and rahu / ketu - 48 years.

PLANETS VS AGE Sun said to be a man of age 23 to 41 , Moon form 0 - 4 years age, Mars 42 - 56 years of age , Mercury is 5 to 14 years of age , Jupiter is said 57 to 68 , Venus is age between 15 to 22 , Saturn , rahu and ketu - 70 to 108 years of age.

TITHI - Nanda Tithi is compared with Fire , badra = Earth ,  Jaya = Akash , Rikta = Water , Purna = vayu .Nanda stands for Fire element , Badra stands for earth element , Jaya stands for Ajash element , Rikta stands for Water element , Purna stands for vayu element.

PANCHANGA - Panchang means five organs and they are Tithi( Date , Nakshatra( Group of stars) , Yoga( Auspecious/ Inauspecious moment) , Karan( Half of the part of tithi) , Vaar( Days of the week) .
The following days are generally called inauspicious - Dagdha , Visha , Hutashan.

IMMEDIATE FRIEND - A planet sitting in house and count planets sitting in three houses - front and back. Those are the immediate friends of that planet.

IMMEDIATE ENEMY - Planets sitting in 6th house , 7th house , 9th house form a planet is called immediate enemy.Moon , mars and Jupiter is the enemy of Sun. Mercury is equal to sun. Venus , Saturn & rahu is enemy of sun. Moon dont have any enemies. Sun and mercury is his friends. Others are equal to moon.Friends of mars are - Sun , Moon and Jupiter. Venus and Saturn is equals to him. Mercury and rahu is his enemy. Friends of mercury is - Sun , Venus and rahu. Equals are Mars , Jupiter and Saturn. Mercury consider moon is his enemy.

RAHU & KETU ROTATION - Rahu and ketu always rotate aniti-clockwise(or opposite direction than the other planets).Friends of Jupiter are Sun , moon and mars. Enemies of Jupiter mercury and Venus.Mercury , venus and rahu is the friend of Saturn. Mercury , venus and Saturn is the friend of rahu. Ketu have mercury , Venus , Saturn and rahu have friends. Saturn , rahu and ketu all three have common enemy and he is Jupiter. Sun , moon and mars all are enemiesof Mercury , venus and rahu.

FULL ASPECTS - Every planet gives 7th house( or 90 degree from it). Some planets have other aspects( or dristi). Mars aspects 4th house and 8th house form where it seats. Jupiter aspects 5th house , 9th house form it . Saturn aspects 3rd house or 10th house form it. According to some classics Rahu aspects 4th house and 8th house form it is placed. Ketu don’t have any aspect.

OTHER DIRSTI/ ASPECT - Planets gives 1/4 aspect in 3rd and 10th house from where it is placed. ½  aspect 5th and 9th house from where it is placed. Planets gives 2/3 aspects in 4th house and 8th house from where it is placed. RASHI DRISTI – Cadinal signs aspects 8th house/ rasi from it. Fixed signs aspects 6th sign from it and Mutable sign aspects 7th house from it.

VELOCITY - Saturn is the slowest planet in the sky. Rahu & ketu next in line. Moon is the karaka of mind is the 1stest object. Average daily motion of saturn is just 2 min. It gets retrograde for 4 and half months a year. Sun takes 1 year to complete the whole zodiac. Saturn takes almost 30 years. Where Jupiter takes 12 years to complete. So, exaltation and debilitation of Saturn and Jupiter people are called lucky and unlucky respectively.

TYPE - Aries , leo adn Sagittaius is fire sign. Capricorn , Taurus and Virgo is earthy sign . Libra , Aquarius and Gemini is Air sign. Cancer , Scorpio and pisces is called Water sign. On the other hand Aries , capricorn and Libra and Cancer is Cardinal. Leo , Taurus , Aquarius and Scorpio is Fixed sign . Sagittarius, Virgo , Gemini , Pisces is Mutable sign.

FOOD HABITS - Moon , Sun & venus reprsents Oganic matter Such as vegetation(Mula). Mars , Satrun & rahu preside over inorganic matter such as minerals. Jupiter and Mercury preside over living beings.. Such as animals.

CREATURES - Sun, Mars rule four legged creatures. Jupiter & venus rule two legged creatures. Moon , rahu , ketu rule rodents , reptiles , multilegged creatures that is insects. Mercury and saturn rule flying creatures that birds.

VATA PITTA & KAPHA - Sun giverns pitta , moon governs vata and kapha , Mars giverns pitta , Mercury Governs Vata , Patta and Kapha , Jupiter Governs kapha , Venys Governs Vata and kapha , Staurn Govern Vata
PHYSICAL PARTS - Sun - Head , Moon - face , Mars - hips , Jupiter - Abdomen , venus - pelvis and sexual organs , Saturn - thighs , Rahu - Hands .

POWER  - When planets are in exalted states it provides 100% results. When Planets are in multrikon sign , it produces 75% results , when planets are in own sign it too provides 75% results , When planets are in friendly houses it provide  50% results. When planets are in enemy houses they could provide negative results. When planets are in debilitated houses it provide 0% results. When planets are in  kendra houses( 1 , 4 , 7 , 10th house from lagna) they are considered as powerful. Planets sitting in 2nd house , 5th house , 8th house and 11th house is called medium powerful . Planets sitting in  3rd , 6th , 9th house and 12th house is called powerless or less powerful.

DIG BALL - Mercury & jupiter in lagna gets powerful  when in lagna. Sun and mars gets powerful when in 10th house. Saturn in 7th house gets powerful . Moon & Venus gets full power when in 4th house. Sun & mars gets digbali when in 10th house. Saturn gets west digball when in 7th house from lagna. Moon & venus gets North digball when in 4th house form lagna. Mercury and Jupiter gets east digball when in lagna.

PAKKHABAL - Jupiter , Mercury , venus , Moon - these planets are strong in Suklapakha. Other planets are strong in Krishnapakha.
POWER OF PLANETS ACCORDING TO DAY/ NIGHT - Mercury is strong in the 1st half of the day. Sun is strong in the 2nd part of the day. Saturn is strong in the 3rd half of the day or end of the day. Moon gets strong in 1st part of the night. Venus gets strong in 2nd half of the night. Mars gets strong in 3rd part of the night.

SOME SPECIAL POINTS - sun and moon placed in cancer sign is neither good , nor bad. Mercury 4th from lagna does not provide any good or any bad results. Jupiter in 5th from lagna does not provide any kind of good or bad results. Mars in 2nd provide neither good nor bad results. Venus in 2nd  neither provide good nor provide bad results. Saturn in 7th house neither provide good nor provide bad results.

RESULTS OF RETROGRADE PLANETS - Retrograde mars provide results of 4th house from where it is placed. Retrograde mercury provide results of 4th house from where it is placed. EXALTATION

1. Sun gets exaltation in Aries. 10 degree of Aries is the highest exaltation point. Aswani nakshatra( Ruled by ketu , Sun is the ketu's enemy but for sun ketu is equal) . Aries is plance of mars - Sun thinks mars is my friend and vise versa.

4. Mercury gets exalted in its own house. Highest exaltation point is 15 deg if Virgo(Hasta Nakshatra , ruled by moon - Moon dont think mercury is my enemy but mercury consider moon is his enemy) . Mercury is own house so no friendship.

Simply we can see following things from the exaltation and debilitation of the planets - 

1. Where Sun is exalted Saturn is debilitated , where Saturn is exalted in the same house sun is Debilitated . So, we can say Saturn and sun may be of different aims in a planetary system.
2. In case Venus - mercury and mars - Jupiter the story is same. Where one is exalted the other is debilitated . Where the other is Debilitated the 1st one is exalted. So, we can say they both may be indicating different things - different to some extent.
3. Mars gets exalted in his own Nakshatra.
4. Saturn and rahu - One is maya and another one is Illusion. One is fake , cheater , liar and another one is honest , moral , karma , limits. They both are Friends astrologically but Saturn highest exalted degree is in Nakshatra of rahu.

If associated or aspected by Saturn or moon – it is very good yoga – blessed with lots of assets and money at later life. If associated or aspected by Venus, then the native is blessed with good married life as well as social life. If aspected or associated with sun then it would help him to get lots of assets, a king like lifestyle and good politician – ministers or CEO or directorship of company.
6. Venus – There are only two planets which make a person lucky throughout the life when these planets are in lagna and they are – Jupiter (I just said in last point) and the one is Venus. In a male chart, the Venus is considered as female and that’s why and the status of Venus is considered as status of female. Good Venus is good wife for a male. Venus in lagna makes a native good businessman. Luxury, costly things, pleasures of bed and all kind of comforts throughout the life. But, Venus is aspected or associated with moon, mars and Jupiter – it is not good then. With moon waste of money, with mars waste of money on wife, accidents. With Jupiter hurdles in social life because Jupiter and Venus are enemies. If Venus is associated with Saturn, creates hurdles to earn money, assets, luxury throughout the life, and comfort of bed. If Saturn is in well positioned then after 40 everything will be solved. But if aspected by Saturn (read carefully when I said “aspected” not “associated”) it gives extra advantages to the native. 7. Saturn – Saturn in lagna depends on which lagna it is. There are basic characteristics of Saturn but they acts different in case of Capricorn or Aquarius and Libra. In this three signs Saturn will give well. However, most of the other signs Saturn don’t work well. Saturn always brings delay, full of hurdles (No matter which work it is) and too much hard work. In the above three signs Saturn is very good and work very differently. When Saturn is in town house Saturn will give success after 40 and then sky is the limit. When Saturn is weak, the native have to work and very less success after 40 – little stability. No matter Saturn is strong or weak, when in lagna – life starts after 40 or more old age. 9. Ketu – Yes Ketu – featured by everyone. Ketu is the most mysterious planet (In fact it is not planet actually, it is actually called south node of moon) in the solar system. The Ketu acts as a shadow planet. Ketu shows the reality of life. If you search over the internet you will see all they are saying bad when Ketu in lagna. The reality is that Ketu in lagna (and aspected or associated by none) makes a man alone, emotionless, full of fear and full of nothing. Since Ketu don’t have any head and along with no brain – Ketu cannot think. The native is just walking and running blindly – they seemed like more way to go. But where to go – no way out. Ketu is just like a man who is walking on a desert – no way out, no home, no man, and no water - nothing. It is just telling a man to leave all these things and be alone. Ketu in lagna makes a man friendless, full of frustration. With mars Ketu also just like a blind soldier firing his gun. Don’t know where to shoot – this indicates life goes to absolutely nothing. Along with mars in Ketu could make a man handicapped. With the help of Venus Ketu makes the family life, love life burned.
